Musopen Origins

Musopen has several origins. It really began as a way for me, Aaron Dunn, to contribute something to my school before I left. Being a musician, I saw countless concerts performed to empty audiences, and I felt that it was almost pointless to have them. I realized much of the music we played was in the public domain, and if I started recording them and sharing them, I could create a fairly large resource of music. After some research in copyright laws, I relazied how little the general public understands their rights, and how easy it is to infringe on a copyright law.

This site and nonprofit entity exists to create, share and educate the public about public domain music.
